We’re excited to announce some big changes at Level! As we move towards a more powerful and flexible platform, we’ll be phasing out Script Jobs and introducing Automations—our enhanced solution for seamless IT management.
Farewell to Script Jobs, Hello Automations!
Over the next few weeks, we'll be phasing out Script Jobs in favor of Automations. While Script Jobs have served us well, we've identified several limitations that Automations solves:
- Cross-platform compatibility: Unlike Script Jobs, Automations can handle running multiple operating systems seamlessly from a single Automation.
- Offline device management: Automations can queue tasks for offline devices, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
- Conditional execution: Run scripts or actions only when specific conditions are met.
- Action chaining: Execute a series of scripts or actions in sequence.
- Scheduling: Set Automations to run on your preferred schedule.
- Event-driven triggers: Automations can be initiated based on specific events or triggers.
- Retry handling: Built-in retry functionality for more reliable execution.
Why Automations are the Future
We believe Automations are the future of bulk device management in Level. Here's why we're going all-in:
- No-code solution: We're focused on adding more Triggers and Actions that you can use to automate tasks without writing any code.
- Enhanced flexibility: Chain actions, set conditions, and create complex workflows with ease.
- Set it and forget it: With offline support, scheduling, and automatic retries, Automations work silently in the background, ensuring tasks complete without constant monitoring.
- Scalability: Manage devices more efficiently, regardless of your fleet size
Migration Path: What You Need to Know
To ensure a smooth transition, we've planned the following steps:
- Script Library Migration: Your Script library will move under Automations, as scripts will now be used exclusively as part of Automations. We’ve introduced the ability to group both your Automations and Scripts!
- Jobs Section Update: The Jobs section will remain available for now but will be phased out in a future update.
- “Run Script” Action: Selecting “Run Script” will soon create an Automation with the selected script and queue the devices, replacing the current workflow of navigating to the Jobs page.
- Improvements to Automations: We're adding some extra features to Automations to make sure they replicate the best parts of Jobs. You will be able to: expand the Automation slide out to better review script output, export Automation results to CSV, and easily rerun recent devices.
What's on the Horizon for Automations?
We're just getting started! Here's a sneak peek at what's coming:
- Variables support: Gain unprecedented control over your Automations. Variables will allow you to pull and reference dynamic data in your Scripts, Actions, and Triggers. We're also exposing a wide range of Level Variables, providing easy access to crucial endpoint details such as hostname, public IP, private IP, and more. This will enable you to create more dynamic and adaptable Automations that can respond to changing conditions in real-time.
- Custom Fields: Enhance your Automations with the power of Custom Fields. This allows you to store and reference arbitrary information about your endpoints directly within your Automations. Say goodbye to duplicating scripts for different clients or groups of devices – with Custom Fields, you can create versatile, reusable Automations that adapt based on the specific attributes you've defined for each endpoint or group.
These new features will work together to dramatically reduce script duplication and increase the flexibility of your Automations. By leveraging Variables and Custom Fields, you'll be able to create more efficient, adaptable, and powerful workflows that cater to the unique needs of different clients or device groups – all from a single, streamlined Automation.
We're excited about these changes and can't wait for you to experience the power of Automations. As always, we value your feedback and are here to support you through this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team.
